Bad Boys Don't Grow Into Good Men

You take one look at him and know HE IS TROUBLE. You wouldn’t even begin to entertain the idea that he can be faithful. Forget about being mushy, this guy is too busy being a bad guy. So what is the attraction? Excitement? Why do we feel we need excitement like this in a relationship?

You wouldn’t go skydiving with a defective parachute would you? Does the risk of the chute not opening and you plummeting to the earth only to break your bones into a thousand pieces excite you? No? So why does risking our emotional well-being by giving the bad boy a shot at plummeting us into depression and low self-esteem only to break our hearts into a thousand pieces excite so many of us?

We don’t want drama at our job everyday, nor do we want to worry about getting fired everyday. But in a relationship, sure, why not have drama on a daily basis and worry about getting dumped everyday? Why are so many women making the wrong choice with bad boys?

I remember being a little girl and seeing Star Wars. When we came out of the movie theater I said to my mother that I wanted to marry Luke Skywalker (good guy) but I wanted Han Solo (bad boy) to be my boyfriend. Now I was little and didn’t mean it the way it sounded, I was just trying to express to my Mom that I liked them both. At such a young age the bad boy Han Solo appealed to me. (However, I think a young Harrison Ford playing ANY role would have appealed to me) The thing is I wasn’t at that age considering his looks, it was the persona of the bad boy character.

Do we all want to be that one woman that can tame the wild child? A good guy can fall for anyone, that doesn’t make us as special as having the bad guy fall for us does it? A good guy is good to everyone, so we may not feel like we are singled out. The idea of a bad boy showing us his good side is more rare, so that alone can make us feel as if we are on a pedestal by ourselves.

Now let’s say the bad boy DOES show his good side, and then he loses that “mystique”, does he then become less attractive to us? The quest is over, the pursuit is finished, so what do we have left? A nice guy? Well why did we even bother taking that risk, going through all that nonsense when we just could have chosen a good guy to BEGIN with?
